Animal shelters in New York City are running out of pets amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Muddy Paws Rescue and Best Friends Animal Society told Bloomberg News that the shelters they work with “are either all out of or almost out of cats and dogs after a surge in applications of as much as 10-fold in the past two weeks.”
“For the moment, we definitely don’t have any dogs left to match,” said Anna Lai, the marketing director at Muddy Paws.
Lai called the recent run on pets in the greater New York area “a great problem to have.”
New York City has become the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States. New York state has reported more than 30,000 confirmed cases and 285 deaths as of Wednesday afternoon.
