The United Nations on Thursday named Wonder Woman, a fictional DC Comics superhero, as its new honorary ambassador for empowering women worldwide.
To honor Wonder Woman’s new title, the United Nations is throwing an event at its New York City headquarters for her on Oct. 21, which also marks the 75th anniversary of the character’s first appearance in DC Comics.
In addition to celebrating Wonder Woman, also known as Diana Prince, the event will also kick off the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goal #5 campaign, focusing on gender equality and female empowerment.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the event will include appearances by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson and a few “surprise guests.”
Wonder Woman is enjoying a resurgence in pop culture after she was portrayed by actress Gal Gadot in last spring’s “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” She is getting her first big-screen solo movie in June 2017, and the United State Postal Service is issuing four commemorative stamps in honor of her anniversary.
Wonder Woman joins actresses Anne Hathaway and Emma Watson as U.N. ambassadors dedicated to helping women in every aspect of their lives.
