Sonia Sotomayor still waiting to hear from half her family in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria hit

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor says she has not heard from half of her family in Puerto Rico, where Hurricane Maria made landfall as a Category 4 storm on Wednesday.

Sotomayor said Puerto Rico “is suffering a great tragedy right now” at an event Thursday at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. She also said she and her family on the mainland are “exceedingly concerned” and asked for prayers for Puerto Rico and other areas like Florida and Texas that were recently hit by hurricanes as well.

Puerto Ricans are expected to be without power for weeks, or possibly months.

At least 19 people in the Caribbean have died from Hurricane Maria, mainly on Dominica.
