Texas Democrat urges GOP to collaborate as Mayorkas impeachment moves forward

Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX) is urging Republicans to work with Democrats to resolve the crisis at the border as a House committee moves impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas forward.

Speaking Wednesday morning on CNN, Veasey said “if Republicans were serious,” they would “sit down with Democrats and come up with a comprehensive plan to really deal with immigration once and for all” instead of working on “impeachment sham hearings.”

Following the news that House Republicans will initiate a series of impeachment hearings against Mayorkas on Jan. 10, the Texas Democrat said President Joe Biden’s secretary of homeland security “is doing the best job that he can.”

While Veasey pushed for more unity, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is leading a Congressional delegation to the border city of Eagle Pass, Texas, on Wednesday.

“I would ask for Republicans to sit down with us and come up with something real so we can stabilize these countries,” Veasey said.

Veasey cited former President Bill Clinton’s partnership between the U.S. and Colombia to combat narcotics trafficking, which helped bring back authority of the Colombian state. Veasey added that thousands of Americans now vacation in Colombia and said similar actions could be taken elsewhere.

“We have to stabilize those countries,” Veasey said. “If you don’t do that, if that’s not a part of the conversation, then we’re not going to do anything to fix this problem.”

Veasey sits on the House Committee on Armed Services and holds a position on the Bipartisan Fentanyl Prevention Caucus, formed in March to address the fentanyl crisis. The drug is frequently smuggled into the country via the U.S.-Mexico border.
