Jeff Sessions confirms bid for US Senate seat in Alabama

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions will run to regain his past U.S. Senate seat in Alabama.

Sessions, 72, announced his intent to run on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight on Thursday. Sessions resigned as attorney general on Nov. 7, 2018, exactly one year prior to his Senate announcement.

Sessions said he will file official paperwork for his run on Friday.

“I had a great tenure at the Department of Justice in so many different ways, and I don’t ever worry about regretting things like that,” Sessions said after host Tucker Carlson asked if Sessions regretted leaving the Senate for the Trump administration.

“It’s not my seat in the Senate, but I believe I have something to give, I have some convictions I think need to be pushed. We need to get some Republicans moving. They haven’t been pushing hard enough to advance the Trump agenda,” Sessions said.

Sessions left the Trump administration after months of tension between himself and the president over the the Russia investigation by former special counsel Robert Mueller. Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation early, handing responsibility for the Justice Department’s investigation over to then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Sessions addressed his relationship with the White House in his first campaign ad, pointing out that after he left the administration, he did not attempt to undermine Trump by writing or speaking about his time in the administration.

“The president is doing a great job for America and Alabama and he has my strong support,” Sessions said in the spot.
