Redskins email report: Scouting the college WRs

Regardless if Peyton Manning comes to Washington or if the Redskins draft Robert Griffin III, there is no doubt about this: The Redskins need to add a playmaking receiver. They need someone who can threaten a defense. And, yes, they can find that guy in free agency.

But if not, the draft has a couple intriguing options. That’s what I’ll cover in my Friday email report, based on conversations with a scout as well as my guy Russ Lande, whose insight is always good. Lande is a former scout who now heads the Sporting News draft coverage. You can visit his website here. In all, I talked to them about 10 different receivers: Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd, Kendall Wright, Juron Criner, Alshon Jeffery, Mohamed Sanu, Nick Toon, Dwight Jones, Joe Adams and Devier Posey.

Among the highlights:

…It is not considered a great group of receivers in the draft, though there is quality at the top. “It’s not a year that gets me excited,” Lande said. By the way, Lande remains high on last year’s third-round pick Leonard Hankerson and thinks he can be an elite player.

…Lande likes Justin Blackmon as a top-10 pick and isn’t worried about his speed, though some teams might be. He also likes Kendall Wright, but does have a couple minor issues with him.

…The are two receivers the scout just didn’t like — one because of what he saw on film and the other from what he saw at the Senior Bowl. One of these players is a potential first-round pick or, most likely, a second-rounder.

…One receiver out west is high on the list of both the scout and the evaluator (though only the scout is quoted on him). Lande calls Arizona’s Juron Criner a possible sleeper first-round pick. “I love him,” Lande said.

…The scout was high on Arkansas’ Joe Adams.
