NYT reporters say Kavanaugh agreed to be interviewed ‘if they wrote that they didn’t talk with him’

Two New York Times reporters who wrote a controversial piece about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s alleged sexual misconduct said he agreed to be interviewed off-the-record, but they had to write that they never spoke with him.

Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly, the co-authors of the new book, The Education of Brett Kavanaugh: An Investigation, said Wednesday that they did not speak with Kavanaugh because they could not agree to the conditions.

“Brett Kavanaugh agreed to talk to @katekelly and @rpogrebin for their book — If they wrote that they didn’t talk to him,” National Press Club president Allison Kodjak tweeted. “The authors — who told the story tonight @PressClubDC — refused and walked away from the interview.”

The duo has come under fire for an excerpt from the book that detailed an allegation of sexual assault against Kavanaugh, who was accused of exposing himself to a college classmate at a party decades ago. The New York Times later updated the piece to note that the alleged victim told friends she did not recall the incident and that she declined to be interviewed.

Pogrebin and Kelly blamed the original omission on the editing process.

Kavanaugh vehemently denied the allegations against him during his combative confirmation hearing a year ago.
