The Maryland Attorney General’s office on Monday, indicted a former Montgomery County insurance agent who is accused of stealing money from her clients during a seven-month span about two years ago.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, Karen Hamilton, 48, formerly of Derwood, was charged with 16 counts of criminal theft and insurance fraud.
Hamilton is accused of stealing close to $10,000 from 10 different clients in the Montgomery County area between November 2003 and June 2004. The money represents premium payments for various insurance policies.
Kevin Enright, a spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office, said the indictment follows a joint investigation conducted by the Insurance Fraud Division of the Maryland Insurance Administration and the Office of the Attorney General.
If convicted of theft, Hamilton could be sentenced to serve 15 years in prison and be fined $25,000. She also faces 15 years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine if convicted on the insurance fraud counts.
No trial date has been set.
Hamilton lives in San Antonio. At the time of the alleged incidents, she was a licensed agent in Maryland.
