The U.S. military is prepared to move Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman to a secure location should he or his family be deemed in physical danger as a result of his public testimony in the impeachment investigation into President Trump.
“The Army will make sure he’s safe, and the Army is actively supporting any safety needs as deemed necessary,” a military spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal. “It’s hard that he has been catapulted into the public eye. He served his country honorably for 20 years, and you can imagine this is a tough situation for him and his family.”
Military officials have been keeping tabs on Vindman’s physical, financial, and online security since he was called as a witness in Democrats impeachment investigation.
Vindman, in sworn public testimony Tuesday, said he was deeply concerned when he learned the details of a July 25 phone call between Trump and the president of Ukraine. During the call, Trump pressured the leader of Ukraine to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden.
A whistleblower alleges Trump withheld military aid to the country as a bargaining chip, the central theme of the Democrats’ impeachment proceedings.
Republicans on Capitol Hill have spent recent weeks discrediting Vindman, a decorated war veteran and Purple Heart recipient, and complained he does not have firsthand knowledge of the call.
