A top strategist to Bill Clinton is advising President Trump on impeachment.
Mark Penn met with Trump for more than an hour in the Oval Office last week, showing him polling data and counseling him on impeachment, according to the Washington Post.
Penn asserted Trump would not be removed from office and said he should travel the country like Clinton did as he was facing impeachment.
He told Trump to “stay focused on the substance” of the controversy surrounding his conduct toward Ukraine “and not respond to everything.”
“You’ve got to govern,” he told the president.
Trump and Penn also met in March to discuss the president’s campaign strategy and special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
Officials said the two are not close, but Penn is connected to Andrew Stein, a longtime Trump friend who publicly called for the president to replace Pence on the 2020 ticket with former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Vice President Mike Pence, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, and Stein were also at the meeting.
Stein said he “buried the hatchet” with Pence during the meeting.
“I told Pence, the president wants him on the ticket and that’s that,” Stein said.
