Metro officials honored a station manager Thursday for saving a passenger’s life. Robert Wormely, who runs the Gallery Place-Chinatown station, used an automated external defibrillator to revive a passenger who suffered from a heart attack Dec. 7. The defibrillator uses an electric shock to get a person’s heart beating in a normal rhythm.
“He was laying on the ground and not breathing. Something needed to be done,” the 26-year Metro employee said of the passenger. “The great thing about the defibrillator is that it tells you what to do from start to finish as soon as you turn it on. The defibrillator saved his life.”

Wormely, whose wife, Sheila, manages the Brentwood station, said he has helped patients suffering from seizures, sugar deficiencies and other maladies, but never a heart attack. Station managers receive first aid training annually.
“His performance was outstanding,” Metro General Manager John Catoe said.
