Fox News’s Tucker Carlson slammed Chris Cuomo as a “mask hypocrite” after he obtained a letter from the CNN anchor’s apartment building management team reprimanding him for not wearing a face mask.
“The protagonist of this story is one Christopher Charles Cuomo, prime-time anchor on CNN and brother of the sitting governor of New York,” Carlson said in an op-ed, which was adapted from his opening monologue on Wednesday evening.
“Before we tell you the story, however, some context: The one thing you are likely to know about Chris Cuomo is that Chris Cuomo really believes in masks, really believes with sincere religious intensity. If there was a shrine to the patron saint of paper surgical masks somewhere in the countryside of Portugal, Chris Cuomo would go there each summer. He would crawl on his knees if he had to, such is his devotion.”
Carlson then read a letter from the management team of Cuomo’s New York City apartment building, which was addressed to Cuomo and dated Aug. 6.
“You have been observed entering and exiting the building and riding the elevator without the required face coverings,” reads part of the letter.
“Even though staff members have asked you to comply with this requirement, you have refused to do so. This is a violation of the Executive Order, building policy, and places other residents and our staff at risk. There are no exceptions to this rule, and you are required to comply.”
The letter also threatened to fine him $500 for not complying.
“But then we did some reporting — and honestly, it pains us to tell you this, but we have confirmed the letter is, in fact, real. It’s not a Russian plant. We called the building manager and she spoke perfect English with not a hint of Slavic inflection. In fact, she admitted writing the letter. We should tell you that she became upset when we mentioned Chris Cuomo by name, but we don’t blame her for that. You don’t want to tangle with the man who does squat thrusts while eating lunch. You don’t know what might happen,” Carlson added in the op-ed, titled “Tucker Carlson: The curious case of Chris Cuomo, mask hypocrite.”
Cuomo has been an outspoken proponent of face masks, and just last week condemned President Trump for not wearing one during public appearances and asked why the president doesn’t feel shame over spreading the virus to his family.
“We may have grown up in the same place, but we are very different people. But this I can relate to. I got my wife and son sick just like he did. But with me, it crushed me. It left me ashamed and super sensitive to keeping people safe,” Cuomo said.
