Quarry application sent back

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors plans to push Vulcan Materials’ application to build a quarry near Nokesville back to the county Planning Commission at Tuesday’s meeting.

Supervisor Wally Covington, R-Brentsville, said under county rules Vulcan’s request for deferral must be granted. Due to “significant changes” to the application, it must be presented again to the commission.

Vulcan must complete engineering work on its septic system and have it approved by the Department of Health before it continues with the application, said Richard Lawson, an attorney for Vulcan.

Several members of the Nokesville community requested that supervisors deny the deferral and finish the process. The community has been fighting several quarry applications for the site on Route 28, near the Stafford County line since the 1960s.

Beatrice Pennefather, of Nokesville, said the company is trying to “shop” for a more convenient date when residents cannot testify against the project or for “a more favorable panel of supervisors,” referring to next year’s elections.
