Puerto Rico earthquake kills at least one and knocks out power island-wide

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake off Puerto Rico’s coast killed at least one person and triggered an island-wide blackout.

Tuesday’s earthquake followed a 5.8-magnitude earthquake on Monday, causing further damage to the island ravaged by hurricanes in recent years.

The mayor of the southern city of Ponce, Mayita Melendez, said a 77-year-old man was killed. Gladyra Archilla, a spokeswoman for the city of Ponce, said the man died when a wall in his home fell on top of him, according to the Washington Post. At least eight people were injured, Melendez told WAPA television.

Puerto Rico’s power authority said one of the island’s main power plants, which was near the epicenter of the earthquake, had been damaged, but officials expected to restore power later Tuesday.

A tsunami alert was issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands but was later canceled.
