A nonprofit organization that is funded by billionaire and former presidential candidate Tom Steyer mocked Republican senators in a Twitter thread.
On Tuesday, NextGen America posted a series of tweets that compared Republican Sens. Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Joni Ernst, Martha McSally, and Thom Tillis to trash cans.

Some Twitter users were shocked by the images, which they viewed as insensitive. One user wrote, “Imagine being small enough to tweet out a thread like this.” Another agreed, writing, “So much for #respectwomen.” A third person tweeted, “NextGenAmerica — come for tepid political takes; stay for displays of the flippant sexism they claim to oppose in others.”

The NextGen tweets compared articles of clothing worn by the senators to trash receptacles colored similarly. The example targeting Ernst compared the female senator from Iowa to a cow eating from an overflowing garbage bin.

NextGen America has registered more than 1 million voters and advocates for liberal issues, including “climate, health care, reproductive freedom, immigration, and equality.” Steyer created the political action committee in 2013, and the group hopes to mobilize younger voters in 2020 to turn out and defeat Trump and Republican members of Congress.
Steyer’s largely self-funded campaign spent more than $190 million on his bid, which failed to win a single Democratic delegate before he dropped out of the race on Feb. 29.
