A former Navy SEAL who was mocked on “Saturday Night Live” for wearing an eyepatch said Monday he won’t demand the show apologize to him, and said an apology wouldn’t mean anything anyway.
“They probably should apologize, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to demand an apology,” said Dan Crenshaw, who is running for a House seat in Texas. “I don’t want to demand an apology that is hollow and empty.”
“They certainly crossed the line, but their apology won’t mean anything to me,” he added. “I think what they should do is if you pool their money together and donate to some veterans charities out there that could really use some help.”
On the show, Pete Davidson said Crenshaw looked like a “hit man in a porno movie,” then said, “I’m sorry. I know he lost his eye in war — or whatever.”
Crenshaw said an IED exploded in front of him, killing his translator and nearly blinding him permanently. He said his bigger problem with the joke is that it wasn’t funny, and said comedy shows should leave politics alone and focus on humor.
“What passes for humor these days it not what used to pass for humor, and I think that’s the big tragedy in all this, right?” he asked.
“Like, why can’t we just be funny again? What happened to our comedy in this country? Why can’t we give the American people a break and separate comedy from politics?”
