Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele ‘exhausted’ by Trump supporters who reject masks

The former head of the Republican National Committee is tired of seeing supporters of President Trump refusing to wear facial coverings amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Michael Steele, who was head of the Republican Party from 2009-11, said there was “only so much” he could say when speaking with Trump supporters who reject the idea that a mask can protect them against the disease.

“I’ve talked to enough of them over the last few days,” Steele said Thursday morning on MSNBC. “I’m exhausted, I’m exasperated. You know, at this point, it’s like save who you can save because there’s only so much you can do.”

Steele added that the refusal to adopt measures to slow the spread of the highly contagious virus was “beyond the imagination.”

“The fact that we have to literally beg people to wear a mask to save their own dumb ass from getting sick — I’m sorry, to me, it is beyond the imagination,” Steele said.

Steele’s remarks come only days after Trump held an indoor rally in Nevada that defied state regulations and his administration’s health guidelines. Trump and his allies have called the rally and other related gatherings “peaceful protests,” a jab at left-leaning politicians who refused to condemn massive protests that ran afoul of local and federal measures and guidelines established to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
