Britain’s Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigned Monday, Downing Street announced.
“This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The prime minister thanks Boris for his work,” a Downing Street spokesman said in a statement, according to reports.
Johnson’s exit comes just hours after David Davis, the Brexit secretary, stepped down from British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Cabinet. Davis said Sunday he decided to resign because he could not back May’s Brexit plan.
“It seems to me we’re giving too much away, too easily, and that’s a dangerous strategy at this time,” Davis told BBC Radio on Monday.
May huddled Friday for a meeting with her Cabinet, during which they reached a compromise on the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union after Brexit.
Johnson referred to May’s proposals for Brexit as “polishing a turd,” according to Sky News.
“Our message now is to the other side, to Europe, that it’s time to get serious and sit down and talk about it,” May told the Sunday Times. “It’s now for Europe to be prepared to sit down and move the pace of negotiations on and talk about it seriously and address what we’ve put forward.”
