Pelosi: Ryan not ‘brave’ for withholding Trump endorsement

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi didn’t give House Speaker Paul Ryan any credit on Thursday for withholding his endorsement of Donald Trump, after she was asked if Ryan’s stance was “brave.”

“Brave? No, I don’t think there’s anything brave about it,” she told reporters.

Ryan and Trump met Thursday, and both emerged citing progress, but saying that more meetings would be needed to ensure they can work together, and that Republicans can back Trump.

But Pelosi said she doubted Trump was moving closer to House Republicans, and said it seemed more likely that Ryan was moving toward Trump. She said a similar thing happened when Ryan delayed his decision about whether to become House speaker.

“The speaker withheld his acceptance of being speaker until they came to terms on the Republican side,” she said. “The appearance was that Republicans had to measure up to his requirements. The reality was that he had to live up to their requirements.”

“And I think that’s what we’re seeing again.”
