Virginia county latest to declare itself 'Second Amendment sanctuary'

A county in Central Virginia is the latest in a string of local municipalities to declare itself a safe haven for gun owners.

The Appomattox County Board of Supervisors on Monday unanimously passed a resolution declaring itself a “Second Amendment sanctuary.”

“The current governor of Virginia has stated that he intends to endorse and pass into law legislation that is unconstitutional as it pertains to the rights enumerated in the U.S. & Virginia Constitution,” the resolution states. “The Appomattox County Board of Supervisors is concerned about the passage of any bill containing language which could be interpreted as infringing the rights of the citizens of Appomattox County to keep and bear arms or could begin a slippery slope of restrictions on the Second Amendment rights of the citizens of Appomattox County.”

More than 100 people packed the board room on Monday night, the Lynchburg News and Advance reported.

“This is the silent majority,” resident Troy Carter told the newspaper. “And they’re waking up.”

The term “sanctuary city” is most commonly associated with immigration. In these places, local leaders have vowed not to cooperate with federal immigration police.

Campbell County, a close neighbor to Appomattox, passed a similar resolution earlier this month. Counties in Texas and Wisconsin have followed suit.

Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam announced earlier this summer aggressive plans on gun control across the commonwealth, including universal background checks; a ban on assault weapons, bump stocks and high-capacity magazines; and limiting handgun purchases, according to the Washington Post.

“The Appomattox County Board of Supervisors wish to express its intent to stand as a Sanctuary County for Second Amendment rights and to oppose, within the limits of the Constitutions of the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia,” the resolution in Appomattox warned. “Any efforts to unconstitutionally restrict such rights, and to use such legal means at its disposal to protect the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms.”

President Trump won 71% of the vote in Appomattox County in 2016.
