Missouri
lawmakers have passed a bill banning
transgender
treatment to children that is expected to be signed by the governor.
The bill
, which establishes the “Missouri Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act,” forbids healthcare providers from providing gender-transition surgeries to minors, and also does not allow providers to give puberty blockers and cross-sex hormone drugs to
children
. This ban will go into effect on Aug. 28 and does not expire until the same date in 2027.

“When you have kids being surgically and or chemically altered for life for no good reason, yes, it’s time for the government to get involved,” said state Rep. Brad Hudson (R) on the House floor,
according to
the Associated Press.
The bill now heads to Gov. Mike Parson’s (R) desk for his signature. In April, Parson pressured the state legislature to pass legislation restricting transgender athletes to playing sports with players who match the sex on their birth certificate as well as legislation banning gender-transition care for children,
according to
Fox 2 Now.
“Both of those bills are going to get done,” Parson said on April 27. “I firmly believe, and if we don’t get it done in session, we’re going to go right into another session, a special session, to complete both of those.”

Parson’s expected signature comes as several Republican states have passed legislation forbidding transgender surgeries for minors. Last month,
the state of Montana
banned transgender surgeries for children after Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) signed
Senate Bill 99
.
Other states banning these types of surgeries for children recently include
Indiana
,
Tennessee
, and
West Virginia
.
