Whoops: Clinton ‘we made history’ tweet features crying Sanders staffer

The Hillary For America Twitter account celebrated Hillary Clinton’s historic presidential nomination with a photo of a crying Bernie Sanders staffer.

The photo, which included the caption “We made history,” featured Nida Allam, a regional director for Sanders’ campaign, crying on the convention floor.

Allam responded to the tweet directly, posting a picture of herself with Sanders, telling the campaign, “I guess you didn’t get the memo.”

“I think it was taken the moment Sen. Sanders was essentially conceding,” Allam told Buzzfeed News. “I became emotional because it brought up memories of all the hard work and all the stories I’ve heard from voters over past months … Hearing their stories of people suffering and knowing they were banking on Sen. Sanders, I was overcome.”

While Allam was surprised the Clinton campaign didn’t verify her identity before posting the photo, she didn’t think she was picked by coincidence, either.

“I think they picked me for very strategic reasons, meaning my headscarf and ethnicity and the fact I’m a woman,” Allam said. “The fact [that] they’re trying to use my emotions for the hard work I’ve put in to this campaign to her advantage is disappointing.”

Despite her tweet’s #StillSanders hashtag, Allam, who plans on running for a state representative seat in North Carolina, said she will be voting for Clinton this November.

“Her staff needs to be more aware that there are a lot of ‘Bernie or Bust’ people and, in my opinion, the campaign should focus on the issues to win them over and not this level of pandering.”
