Take 5 for August 5

Bicycle Film Festival, through Saturday Is Washington, D.C., a bike-friendly city?

“I would say it’s bicycle-friendly,” said D.C. resident Nick Barkley. “The bicycle culture is a small group, but it’s expanding. It’s a growing culture and a growing scene.”

If anyone has a sense of D.C.’s bike scene, Barkley would. He’s the area producer of the Bicycle Film Festival, which runs though Saturday.

Brendt Barbur founded the BFF is New York in 2001. The event has since gone international, with festivals in cities around the world. This is the third year the event has come to D.C.

“It’s just to celebrate cycling,” Barkley said, adding that the event brings together film lovers and cyclists. “It combines the two cultures.”

D.C.’s BFF highlights dozens of short and feature-length films, presented in blocks at the Gala Theatre. Friday night’s after-party is at the Wonderland Ballroom, and DC9 hosts an after-party on Saturday.

Barkley predicts more than a thousand attendees this year.

“Hopefully we build on last year’s success,” he said.

Barkley said the appeal of cycling lies in the fun, convenience and health benefits of getting around on two wheels. With the BFF, he hopes to spread that message.

“We can certainly try,” Barkley said.
