Omar reacts to ‘send her back’ chants: ‘This is about us fighting for what this country truly should be’

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar responded to the chants about her that occurred during President Trump’s Wednesday night rally while speaking to reporters on Thursday.

During Trump’s rally in North Carolina the night prior, the crowd broke out into a chant of “send her back” as the president was criticizing Omar.

“We have said this president is racist. We have condemned his racist remarks. I believe he is fascist,” Omar said in response. “I want to remind people that this is what this president and his supporters have torn our country, that is supposed to be a country where we allow democratic debate and dissent to take place. And so, this is not about me; this is about us fighting for what this country truly should be.”

The remarks from Omar and Trump come amid a weeklong feud that began last weekend when the president encouraged her and three other freshmen progressive congresswomen of color to “go back” to their native countries if they were unhappy in the United States. Omar is the only one of the group to be born outside the United States, but she is an American citizen.

The president has proceeded to double and triple down on the remarks while Democrats and a small percentage of Republicans have condemned them. The House passed a resolution to condemn the remarks earlier this week.
