Tennis legends play, party for a good cause

Last week Baltimore?s own tennis legend Pam Shriver was in town for her 21st “Tennis Challenge.” She threw a pre-match party and auction at the Hippodrome Theater in The Frances Merrick Performing Arts Center, Baltimore. In raising money for her charities, Pam hosted a reception that treated guests to great food, drinks and entertainment. U.S. Doubles Champs, and twin brothers, Bob and Mike Bryan, treated the crowd to their rock n? roll musical talents. Pam mingled with the tennis fans who asked the mother of three how Christmas is looking. “Wow, it?s gonna be really cool. My 2 1/2-year-old really didn?t understand what all the hubbub was about last year, so this year should be fun.” Having a ball at this Rock and Racquets event were Marc Kantrowitz, managing director of The Mercantile Tennis Challenge; Margaret Levy, former teacher at McDonogh; Nancy and Van Strakes; Terry and Micheline ;Arenson and the fab and fit, over 50 Martina Navratilova.

SECOND SET

Game day with the young guns of tennis, the Bryan brothers were amusing, to say the least. There were great serves, even better shots and an overhead that nailed Helen Passano right in the head as hubby Mac looked on. The twins? dad, Wayne, was quickly at Helen?s side with the culprit ball signed by his sons. Heck of a way to get a memento. Other pros participating included Lindsay Davenport, Mardy Fish, Robby Ginepri and Baltimore Orioles second baseman ? and good sport ? Brain Roberts. Seen enjoying the fun were tennis fans JoAnne Towers Hampson, Betsy Keppler, the Gutberlet Family, Richard Vatz from Towson University, former Baltimore Colt Joe Washington, and John and Pat Ghinger. The Bryan brothers were not the only twins on the court. Ball boys John and Joe Tamburo loved feeding and retrieving wayward tennis balls. This two-day event raised more than $227,000, and that made the folks from the Baltimore Community Foundation feel the LOVE.

BE A STAR

Monyka Berrocosa, food and wine consultant and author of “One Sip at a Time,” recently hosted the ultimate Mom?s Night Out event at The Marriott-Camden Yards. Gals and their pals filled the posh environment on canopied lounge beds scattered throughout the room, where ladies sipped Canard-Duchene Champagne, magic potion cocktails and tasted yummy culinary delights. Could it get any better? Oh yeah! Up-do by Spa on the Avenue and The Spa in Hunt Valley, Lancome makeovers and shopping. Money raised is for The Priceless Gown Project. It provides a boutique for young ladies heading for prom to be able to feel confident in the gown that makes them feel special for their special night. Bottom line: “Girls [of all ages] just wanna have fun.” For more information, contact Monyka at [email protected]

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME

ESPN?S AM 1300 Sports Radio afternoon host, dubbed “The Ultimate Sports Chick,” a Miami transplant, Anita Marks, made agaffe on air last week, referring to a black athlete who tested positive for steroids as a “Juice Monkey.” Eeeks. The term is apparently used in certain circles, but not all in Charm City found it amusing. A perplexed on-air apology followed, sort of. Ms. Marx may want to seek the knowledge of Emily Post, etiquette expert, on how to conduct an apology properly. I bet Emily would tell her not to make herself the victim in an apology, especially when it offended some of us from the “Every American” community.
