VIDEO: 1980s Bernie Sanders ‘personally surprised’ how popular Reagan was in Soviet Union

Unearthed video from the 1980s catches Sen. Bernie Sanders saying he was caught off guard at how popular then-President Ronald Reagan was in the Soviet Union.

The video, posted Wednesday on Twitter by the Reagan Battalion, shows the Vermont independent as he is returning home from his honeymoon in the Soviet Union. “I was personally surprised at how popular Reagan is in the Soviet Union,” he said.

The Reagan Battalion also posted old footage of Sanders saying he wanted the United States government to have “public ownership of significant parts of the economy.”

Sanders has lots of tapes from his time as mayor of Burlington, Vermont, in the 1980s. In January, a supporter of Beto O’Rourke posted a video of Sanders and his wife Jane O’Meara Sanders on their honeymoon in Russia in 1988. In the video, Sanders can be seen wearing only boxers while he sings This Land is Your Land.
