NHL goalie wears painted mask to honor Native Americans, defying league rules

Minnesota
Wild goalie
Marc-Andre Fleury
broke with
NHL
rules by wearing a specialty mask on Friday.

Fleury brought the mask out while warming up on the Native American Heritage Night hosted by his team. His mask was painted for the occasion, and it was meant to honor his wife, who is Native.

This
rule from the NHL
came after several players complained they were pressured to participate in Pride Night by altering their uniforms with rainbows. As a result, the league banned any alterations to uniforms regardless of the theme.

Arizona Coyotes player Travis Dermott
defied the ban
last month by placing rainbow tape on his hockey stick. Dermott had playing time during the game, unlike Fleury, who did not enter the ice. The NHL said it would review his violation, but a punishment of any kind has yet to be issued.
