Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse commended the decision to arrest the two prison guards who were supposed to keep watch over Jeffrey Epstein prior to his suicide.
Two of Epstein’s guards were arrested early Tuesday morning after they admitted that they forged records related to their watch over the accused sex-trafficker. The two guards had been asleep when Epstein hanged himself in his cell. They were supposed to check in on Epstein every 30 minutes but failed to do so.
Sasse, 47, celebrated their arrest but noted that the investigation into Epstein’s death should not stop there. He noted that Epstein’s death likely protected the financier’s co-conspirators and urged investigators to continue.
“Heads needed to roll the day Jeffrey Epstein died. The Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Justice need to start giving the public some answers,” Sasse stated. “These arrests are important, but they’re not the end of this: These guards aren’t the only ones who should stand trial — every one of Jeffrey Epstein’s co-conspirators should be spending the rest of their lives behind bars.”
Sasse has kept a close eye on Epstein’s suicide. After the news of his death broke, Sasse urged Attorney General William Barr to investigate the circumstances. He wrote to Barr, saying, “Given Epstein’s previous attempted suicide, he should have been in a padded room under unbroken, 24/7, constant surveillance.”
The two officers worked at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. They will be charged in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan. The city’s medical examiner has confirmed that Epstein died by hanging despite theories that others were involved in his death.
