A California sheriff says he will not enforce a new coronavirus curfew imposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday.
“The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office will not be determining—including entering any home or business—compliance with, or enforcing compliance of, any health or emergency orders related to curfews, staying at home, Thanksgiving or other social gatherings inside or outside the home, maximum occupancy, or mask mandates,” Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said in a statement released shortly after the state announced a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. coronavirus curfew set to begin on Saturday.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office added that no officers will be dispatched for anyone violating the order and callers will instead be advised to dial the county health department at 311.
Newsom currently resides in the Fair Oaks neighborhood of Sacramento County.
The Washington Examiner reached out to both Newsom’s and Jones’s offices but did not receive an immediate response.
“Due to the rise in #COVID19 cases, CA is issuing a limited Stay at Home Order,” Newsom tweeted Thursday. “Non-essential work and gatherings must stop from 10pm-5am in counties in the purple tier. This will take effect at 10pm on Saturday and remain for 1 month. Together–we can flatten the curve again.”

Newsom was widely mocked for the tweet, with references to a news story from earlier this week where the governor was caught eating dinner in a large group indoors without a mask in violation of his own guidelines, which he apologized for after the fact.
