Spain’s monarchs will not visit the White House in April after more than 200,000 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed worldwide.
The White House announced Wednesday that the forthcoming state visit by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia on April 21 has been postponed because of the pandemic. The visit was delayed “in order for the United States and Spain to continue to devote their full resources and attention to the COVID-19 response,” press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.
“The United States will continue to work with Spain and all of our European partners to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

The state visit would have been the third for Trump. The president and first lady Melania Trump hosted French President Emmanuel Macron in April 2018 and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in September 2019.
Spain’s king and queen last visited the White House in June 2018.
Earlier this month, Trump implemented travel restrictions on foreigners entering the U.S. from Europe.
