Pelosi: Impeachment talk is a ‘gift to Republicans’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Thursday that talk about impeaching President Trump is only going to help Republicans in the midterm elections, and tried to “discourage” House Democratic members from broaching the subject.

“On the political side, I think it’s a gift to Republicans to talk about impeachment,” Pelosi told reporters when asked about comments made by former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid this week.

“I have said over and over again that I don’t think we should be talking about impeachment,” Pelosi said. “I’ve been very clear right from the start.”

“This is an election that we must win for our children and for the fate of our nation. This election is not about what’s going on in the White House and the rest of that,” Pelosi said. “They criticized me when I was speaker before for not impeaching President Bush … I don’t think we have the information to go to that place and I discourage any discussion of impeachment.”

Reid, the former Democratic leader from Nevada, told NBC News Monday that despite his thoughts on Trump personally, it is a bad move for Democrats to discuss impeachment.

“I’ve been through impeachment, and they’re not pleasant,” Reid said. “And the less we talk about impeachment the better off we are.”
