Liberal filmmaker Michael Moore is no fan of President Trump but admits the Republican had one thing right during the 2016 election.
“The people that came out for Trump — I’m not talking about the racist, white supremacist part. I’m talking about those people who are sick and tired of the system. Trump told them it was rigged. It was rigged. And he was right when he said that,” Moore said during an appearance Wednesday on MSNBC.
Moore said Trump won in 2016 because voters could relate to his message about how the political system, economy, and media were “rigged” against them.
“He won on that,” Moore said but noted Trump “hasn’t delivered” on addressing those issues.
Moore’s comments were part of a larger discussion about the 2020 election, in which he made the case for independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, his preferred candidate for president. He also endorsed Sanders in 2016 and accused the Democratic National Committee of rigging the system against the liberal senator in favor of Hillary Clinton. Sanders himself implied the same thing just this year.
This time around, Moore said the system is “rigged in favor of the Donald Trumps” and warned more centrist candidates such as former Vice President Joe Biden or former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg are destined to lose.
“So when you have somebody like Bernie who just comes right out and says, ‘Yeah, it is rigged, but I’m going to tell you how it’s rigged because it’s been rigged in favor of the Donald Trumps,'” Moore said.
“Bernie needs to say, ‘I’m going to build a ‘Medicare for all’ system, and Donald Trump is going to pay for it or all the Donald Trumps out there are going to pay for it.’ We need to come at this really hard, and that’s what the American people want. That’s how we’re going to win,” he added.
Moore, 65, has advocated in favor of impeaching Trump and said the only person who could “crush” Trump in the upcoming election is former first lady Michelle Obama.
