Bill de Blasio’s wife cast doubt on whether the New York City mayor would run for president, by saying the timing is “not exactly right” for that kind of move.
Chirlane McCray told Politico in an interview released Wednesday that her husband would “be a great president,” but that the pressures of his job would make a presidential bid difficult right now.
Despite doubts from his wife, de Blasio’s office says a run is still possible.
“As the First Lady said, the mayor is focused on his job,” the mayor’s director of communications, Michael Casca, said in a statement. “But they’re not ruling anything out at this point.”
Last weekend, when de Blasio returned from a trip to Iowa, he said he had “not ruled out a run for president, obviously,” but added that he needed to discuss the potential with his family.
There are already a dozen Democrats running for the party’s bid to take on President Trump in 2020. One candidate is fellow New Yorker Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
