Trump to join Senate Republican policy lunch

President Trump will join the Republican senators’ weekly policy lunch on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, according to a memo that was sent to GOP offices.

The president is under fire for removing State Department Inspector General Steve Linick on Friday. Sen. Chuck Grassley, in a letter sent to Trump on Monday, demanded a “detailed reasoning” by June 1 for why Trump chose to do so. “Removal of IGs without explanation could create a chilling effect in the oversight community, and risks decreasing the quantity, quality, fidelity, and veracity of their reports,” he wrote.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is also on Capitol Hill, where he was scheduled to meet with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy earlier Tuesday morning. Mnuchin is testifying before the Senate Banking Committee alongside Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

“The Vice President and I just had a good update with Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy. I think it was very helpful. And I’m off to testify with Chair Powell,” Mnuchin told reporters on Tuesday morning.
