Missing West Point cadet found dead days after disappearing with M4 rifle

A U.S. Military Academy cadet has been found dead days after he went missing.

The body of 20-year-old Kade Kurita of California was discovered Tuesday night at the West Point post in New York. The cause of his death is under investigation, but no foul play is suspected, the elite military academy said.

“We are grieving this loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to Cadet Kurita’s family and friends,” Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams, the superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, said in a statement Wednesday.

Kurita was reported missing Friday evening when he failed to report for a scheduled military skills competition. The school said Tuesday there had not been any activity from Kurita’s cellphone or financial accounts, leading officials to believe he was “still in the vicinity of West Point.”

The school said an M4 rifle was also missing, but Kurita was “not believed to have any magazines or ammunition.”

“At this point, there is no indication Kurita poses a threat to the public, but he may be a danger to himself,” the academy said in a statement Tuesday.

Military, federal, state, and local agencies helped in the search for the missing cadet.
