First lady Melania Trumpâs plane was forced to return to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Wednesday after smoke appeared on board.
Trump was on her way to Philadelphia to visit Thomas Jefferson University Hospital as part of her âBe Bestâ initiative.
Members of the press traveling with the first lady reported seeing âa thin haze of smokeâ and could âsmell something burning.â Press were then given wet towels to hold over their faces âif the smell became too strong.â
Trumpâs communications director Stephanie Grisham told the Washington Examiner a âminor mechanical issueâ was to blame.
âEverything is fine and everyone is safe,â she said.
The plane landed safely at Joint Base Andrews shortly after the incident.
Trump, her team, and members of the press boarded a separate plane about an hour later for the trip to Philadelphia.
