House Republicans plan to question Hunter Biden in a closed-door deposition on Feb. 28, a date that comes after months of negotiations about the terms for interviewing the GOP’s star impeachment witness.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) announced the plans in a statement Thursday, indicating their committees would jointly conduct the interview of President Joe Biden‘s son when he appears.
“His deposition will come after several interviews with Biden family members and associates. We look forward to Hunter Biden’s testimony,” the chairmen said.
They also noted plans to interview several Biden family business associates in the coming weeks. They said they scheduled interviews with Mervyn Yan and Rob Walker for next week, Eric Schwerin and Joey Langston for the following week, and Tony Bobulinski for the week of Feb. 5.
The GOP chairmen are still in the process of finalizing a date to meet with Joe Biden’s brother James, according to a source familiar with the plans.
Settling on a date to question Hunter Biden comes after the first son came within inches of the House voting to hold him in contempt of Congress. The two committees had advanced contempt resolutions last week, and GOP leadership announced a full House vote had been scheduled for this week. The vote was scrapped and will no longer happen — as long as the deposition proceeds according to plan.
Comer and Jordan initially subpoenaed Hunter Biden in November. The first son openly flouted the subpoenas, however, and instead made two surprise visits to Capitol Hill, one this month and one last month, in a show of defiance against the impeachment inquiry.
Hunter Biden shifted gears, however, and adopted a more cooperative position last Friday as the possibility of being held in contempt of Congress became a more concrete reality.

Republicans have alleged that Joe Biden was improperly involved in his family members’ business ventures when he was vice president, and Hunter Biden has led the most lucrative and controversial of those endeavors during the past decade.
Republicans have not uncovered conclusive evidence to prove Joe Biden’s involvement at this stage, but their slate of scheduled witnesses are likely to provide illuminating details about the business dealings, as they all have had firsthand involvement in them.
