Police have arrested an environmental protester who scaled a government building in Washington, D.C., to unfurl an anti-fossil fuels banner during an Earth Day event.
The Protective Services Division of the Department of General Services arrested the protester around 8 a.m. on Friday after receiving reports someone had climbed on top of the building, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to the Washington Examiner. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene, using a ladder truck to lower the banner and remove the person from the ledge.
The banner, which read “No new fossil fuels,” was hung at the front of the Wilson Building, which houses the offices and chambers of the mayor’s office and the D.C. Council. As authorities responded, the protester gave an enthusiastic fist pump before being removed from the ledge.
