House panel advances Mayorkas articles of impeachment

The House Homeland Security Committee approved two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in the early morning hours on Wednesday, clearing a major hurdle that tees up a floor vote as soon as next week.

In a daylong markup hearing that stretched past midnight, lawmakers voted along party lines to move ahead with impeaching Mayorkas for his handling of the southern border crisis. A majority vote of the full chamber would make him the first Cabinet official to be impeached since 1876.
