Six students suffered minor injuries Wednesday in a BB gun shooting at Pikesville High School.

A popping sound caught students? attention shortly after 11 a.m. as they gathered for lunch in the courtyard, Sgt. Vickie Warehime said. The students, all boys, noticed their injuries and realized they?d been hit, several in the leg or arm, she said. Some of the boys were picked up by their parents while others went on to afternoon classes.

Authorities believe the BB gun and the shooter were already in the school before the incident, Warehime said. However, police have not determined whether the shooter was a student.

Officials decided not to place the school on lockdown or interrupt the normal class schedule after the students ? all between the ages of 14 and 16 ? reported their injuries to school officials, she said.

Police planned to investigate into the evening Wednesday, interviewing students and narrowing their search for a suspect.

Police recovered a BB gun from under a bush later in the day with the help of construction workers, who happened to be on the roof of the school, Warehime said. They pointed authorities to a spot where they thought they?d seen a weapon thrown.

“Fortunately, there was no disruption to our instructional program today,” Principal Barbara Walker said in a written statement, “and I commend our students and families for working with us to continue to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment at Pikesville High.”
