King Charles III has cancer, Buckingham Palace announces

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that King Charles III, 75, has been diagnosed with cancer.

The palace announced the cancer was discovered after tests performed during a recent hospital stay the king had for treatment of an enlarged prostate.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the palace said in a statement.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,” the statement continued.

Charles decided to release his diagnosis to avoid speculation on the matter and “assist public understanding” for those affected by cancer, according to the palace.

The king was released from his hospital stay shortly after his surgery, which the royal family announced was successful. He had his first public outing on Sunday, attending church service.

The king has been on the throne since his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died in September 2022, with his coronation being held in May 2023. Charles’s son William, the Prince of Wales, is next in line for the British throne.

William’s wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, was also hospitalized last month for “planned abdominal surgery,” which was described as successful by Kensington Palace. The palace said she would not return to public duties until after Easter. Catherine’s and Charles’s hospital stays were unrelated.
