Target pulls Black History Month product for misidentifying black leaders

A Nevada American history teacher picked up a magnetic activity book listing iconic civil rights leaders for Black History Month at retail giant Target but later discovered multiple inaccuracies when she looked closer at it, which she captured in a viral TikTok video.

Tierra Espy, a Las Vegas high school teacher, bought Civil Rights Magnetic Learning Activity, a tin case of 26 magnets and informational cards featuring illustrations of black leaders. The activity book, however, published the wrong names and images of Carter G. Woodson, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Booker T. Washington.

“I don’t know who is in charge of Target, but these need to be pulled off the shelves immediately,” Espy said in her social media video.

Espy had bought the activity book to hand out to her children, but after opening up the item to discover its egregious errors, she took to social media to warn others.

“I teach U.S. history … and I noticed some discrepancies as soon as I opened this,” the history teacher said in her video.

She added, “I get it. Mistakes happen. But this needs to be corrected ASAP.”

After Espy posted her video pointing out the flaws last week, Target confirmed it would remove the item from its stores and website.

Target has had a string of customer criticisms and boycotts in the past year. Last year, there was backlash over Pride-themed products, including a holiday uproar when the retail giant promoted the selling of an ornament of a black Santa Claus in a wheelchair along with a Pride-themed “gay nutcracker” Christmas ornament.
