Biden’s age ‘major concern’ for over half of Democratic voters

Democratic voters concerned about President Joe Biden’s age have cast a shadow over his 2024 campaign as the party’s nominating process begins.

Over half of Biden’s voter base, 54%, say they have major or moderate concerns about whether the Democratic president has the mental and physical health to hold office when asked about his age, according to a national NBC News poll released Tuesday. Sixty-two percent of total respondents reported they have “major concerns” about Biden’s age and health.

Supporters of Biden, 81, are worried about his ability to effectively serve a second term, becoming a focal point on the campaign trail both by Democrats and his Republican opponents. A recent campaign ad from former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley labeled Biden and former President Donald Trump as “Two Grumpy Old Men,” and rolled out other titles like “Stumbling Seniors.”

Mental and physical acuity have been less of a concern for Trump, who, at 77, is only four years younger than Biden. According to the NBC survey, 48% of pollsters say they have “major” or “moderate” concerns about the Republican front-runner’s mental and physical health when speaking about his age.

Trump facing 91 felony counts in four criminal indictments in multiple jurisdictions is a top concern for voters. Sixty-one percent of voters say they have major or moderate concerns about the former GOP president’s criminal and civil trials. Looking further at that question, 95% of Democrats report they have major or moderate concerns, 65% of independents report the same, and only 27% of Republicans feel the same about their party leader.

Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt, who conducted the survey, said while “voters are more concerned about Biden’s age than Trump’s trials … Biden is still getting 17% among voters who have major concerns about his age, while just 10% of voters who have major concerns about Trump’s trials are voting for him.”
