Evan McMullin: Trump supporters ‘not too committed to the Constitution’

Independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin said Donald Trump’s supporters do not understand the nation’s basic laws.

“Anyone who supports Donald Trump is someone who I think is not too committed to the Constitution,” McMullin told the Guardian. “I believe Donald Trump poses a true threat to our Constitution and those who support him are sustaining that threat.”

The former chief policy director for the House Republican Conference admits his long-term goal is saving the Republican Party from itself, but remains adamant he will win the general election in November.

McMullin envisions his path to victory would be through exploiting an electoral deadlock come Election Day. If Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton are blocked from reaching 270 votes, the House would be forced to give one vote to the three top-performing candidates on behalf of each state.

The 40-year-old former CIA agent said he expects to do well in the Mountain West, but it is unlikely that would be enough to make it to the Oval Office. McMullin would then rely on his House connections to give him the votes he needs, which he said could happen since he understands the lower chamber.

However, McMullin has been polling so poorly that RealClearPolitics has not included him in the four-way match-up surveys they it has conducted. It would be far more likely for Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson to be the third-place contestant.
