Baltimore City councilwoman Rikki “Rochelle” Spector insists she did not use any political influence to talk her way out of a November traffic ticket. She insists she was only trying to help city motorists by bring the actions of a “rude” agent to the attention of Department of Transportation officials. She told The Examiner she has no regrets.
Questions have been raised as to why did you bring the ticket to the Department of Transportation in the first place? What’s your response?
Whenever anybody works for local government and they have to deal with the public they should be sensitive and handle the public with care. That’s not what happened to me and I thought it should be addressed.
Treat others as you want to be treated yourself, that’s what I believe and that’s what I think ought to be the mantra of city government.
Do you think the department of transportation made an mistake when they abated the ticket?
I don’t know what went on internally there. I only know that they responded to my concerns, which is better training for the traffic enforcement officers. I know that they brought in Ken Unitas to help train agents and give them better skills for dealing with the public and that was my main concern.
Do you think this could have been handled differently?
To me all is well that ends well. The department responded to me as best they could, and I got to tell it to judge. That’s what I always said I wanted to happen, that’s what did happen.
