South Carolina mother shoots and kills intruder to protect children

A mother in South Carolina shot a man dead Sunday after the intruder forced his way into her home and presented a threat to her two children, authorities said.

Deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department responded to the residence at the Greenbrier Apartments around 5 a.m. and found both the mother and the corpse of the intruder, according to a report.

The woman recalled that she was aware of the intruder when she heard loud banging on her door, authorities said.

As she walked up to the door, a man forced his way into her unit, and she drew a gun from her purse.

She demanded the intruder identify himself, but he continued to approach her, and she opened fire, killing him, according to the report.

The mother called law enforcement moments after fatally shooting the man, the report noted.

She followed them to headquarters for questioning and was released after authorities determined her actions were in self-defense.

The children were not harmed in the incident, and no charges have been filed. It is believed the woman and the intruder did not know each other prior to the home invasion.
