A small business in Wisconsin has generated controversy over religious-themed candles featuring Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce it was selling, with some condemning the candles as “blasphemous.”
The candles from Mixed Bag MKE also featured musician Taylor Swift, Kelce’s girlfriend, and his brother Jason Kelce. The candles portrayed the three celebrities in a similar manner to prayer candles that show Jesus Christ or other biblical figures.
“I will still sell these candles and I don’t care if you think it’s sacrilegious,” a statement from the business said, sharing various messages it had received over the candles. “That’s not how I or any of my customers feel and I won’t be bullied into changing the way I do business. Take it up with someone else. You’re wasting your time and energy with me.”
A statement from the store released on Sunday revealed that there were some protesters who stood outside the store with various signs. However, the store experienced “the busiest day I think we’ve ever had,” with the post thanking customers who shopped at the location.
The candles themed around the Kelce brothers and Swift are not the only celebrity-themed candles sold by the store, as other celebrities used for these types of candles include Harry Styles and Keanu Reeves. The character Ted Lasso from the show of the same name, played by actor Jason Sudeikis, also had a candle themed around him.
