President Joe Biden excoriated House Republicans for impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the handling of the southern border.
“History will not look kindly on House Republicans for their blatant act of unconstitutional partisanship that has targeted an honorable public servant in order to play petty political games,” Biden wrote Tuesday.
The White House mocked House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) last week after House Republicans did not pass the same measure due to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise‘s (R-LA) absence from the chamber. This week’s 214-213 vote had the same Republicans opposing it, Reps. Ken Buck (R-CO), Mike Gallagher (R-WI), and Tom McClintock (R-CA).
“The same Republicans pushing this baseless impeachment are rejecting bipartisan plans Secretary Mayorkas and others in my administration have worked hard on to strengthen border security at this very moment — reversing from years of their own demands to pass stronger border bills,” Biden said. “Congress needs to act to give me, Secretary Mayorkas, and my administration the tools and resources needed to address the situation at the border.”
Mayorkas has “upheld the rule of law faithfully” and “demonstrated a deep commitment to the values that make our nation great,” according to Biden, underscoring the secretary’s work with the Justice Department before transferring to the Department of Homeland Security.
“Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas, a Cuban immigrant who came to the United States with his family as political refugees, has spent more than two decades serving America with integrity in a decorated career in law enforcement and public service,” Biden said. “Instead of staging political stunts like this, Republicans with genuine concerns about the border should want Congress to deliver more border resources and stronger border security.”
Biden called on the House to pass the Senate’s $95 billion national security supplemental “right away,” saying his administration will “continue pursuing real solutions to the challenges Americans face, and House Republicans have to decide whether to join us to solve the problem or keep playing politics with the border.”

The president earlier criticized House Republicans for being against the Senate’s foreign aid bill, simultaneously blaming former President Donald Trump for putting pressure on the conference to do so.
“House Republicans, you’ve got to decide: Are you going to stand up for freedom, or are you going to side with terror and tyranny?” Biden asked Tuesday from the White House. “Are you going to stand with Ukraine, or are you going to stand with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin? Or will you stand with America or with Trump?”
