One killed and about 20 injured in shooting at Kansas City Super Bowl victory parade: Police

One person was killed, and about 20 others were injured in a shooting at the Super Bowl victory parade for the Kansas City Chiefs, authorities announced Wednesday.

Kansas City, Missouri, Police Chief Stacey Graves announced at a press conference around 4:00 p.m. local time that one person was killed in the shooting, with up to 15 injured. Two suspects were taken into custody.

Authorities later amended that number to say that about 22 people were wounded by the gunfire, with eight of them being children, according to the Associated Press.

Over 800 law enforcement officers were present at the scene at the time of the shooting. Graves stressed that the investigation is still underway.

“Shots were fired west of Union Station near the garage and multiple people were struck,” the KCPD announced on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We took two armed people into custody for more investigation.”

Videos posted on social media showed heavily armed police entering Union Station, with a panicked crowd fleeing.

Family members of Chiefs receiver Justin Watson were in the station at the time of the shooting, but they were unharmed, they told WTAE.

President Joe Biden reportedly called Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas to offer federal assistance in the investigation into the shooting.
