Biden impeachment inquiry: Top Democrat demands video release of Bobulinski’s ‘chaotic’ testimony

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee hammered former Hunter Biden business partner Tony Bobulinski for his testimony to lawmakers last week and accused the key witness of making “baseless accusations and insults,” according to a letter sent to Bobulinski’s lawyer.

Ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) sent the letter on Tuesday, criticizing Bobulinski for making “outlandish” claims during his interview and calling on his Republican colleagues to release footage of the full interview “so that the American people can judge directly who is telling the truth and who is prevaricating at every turn.”

“Your client’s interview was chaotic to the point of burlesque as he repeatedly yelled, shouted, filibustered, and hurled outlandish and baseless accusations and insults against Democratic members and staff,” Raskin wrote in the letter, which was obtained by the Washington Examiner.

Raskin cited several moments throughout Bobulinski’s interview in which he accused multiple FBI agents and other people and organizations of lying, including former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson and the Wall Street Journal. However, the Maryland Democrat denounced those characterizations, instead accusing Bobulinski of making “wild claims” that could not be proven.

“Mr. Bobulinski did not offer any evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden,” Raskin said. “He also did not provide any evidence that President Biden was involved in his family’s business dealings.”

The letter comes after Bobulinski met with lawmakers behind closed doors last week, during which he testified that he had witnessed firsthand how President Joe Biden was involved with his family members’ business dealings with a Chinese energy conglomerate. That company, CEFC, was tightly interwoven with the Chinese government, and Bobulinski said he remembered asking Joe Biden’s brother James, who was also involved in their venture, how the family was getting away with using Joe Biden’s political prominence and influence to secure work with CEFC.

Many of the claims Bobulinski shared were first shared in 2020, prompting then-presidential candidate Joe Biden to deny ever speaking to his son or his son’s associates about their business ventures.

However, much of his testimony has contradicted other witnesses who have appeared before lawmakers, including Biden business associate Rob Walker, who told the FBI in 2020 that Bobulinski’s claims were merely “wishful thinking.” Walker also testified before the Oversight Committee that President Biden “was never involved in any business activities” conducted by his family members.

A spokesperson for Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) pushed back on Raskin’s challenge to Bobulinski’s testimony, claiming the former business associate told lawmakers under oath that “Joe Biden was ‘the brand’ the Bidens sold to enrich the family.”

“Joe Biden not only knew about his family’s dealings with a Chinese Communist Party-linked energy company, but he also enabled them and participated in them,” the spokesperson said. “We now have evidence revealing Joe Biden met with nearly all of his son’s foreign associates who funneled him millions of dollars and evidence revealing he benefited from his son’s influence-peddling schemes. Democrats continue to ignore this corruption and smear Tony Bobulinski as they play defense attorney for the Bidens.”

The letter comes as Republicans prepare to hear from both James Biden and Hunter Biden in closed-door depositions this month as part of their monthslong inquiry into whether the president abused his power while vice president. James Biden is scheduled to testify on Wednesday, with Hunter Biden to follow next week.

The inquiry is looking into three main things, all of which relate to Hunter Biden: whether President Biden improperly used his position of power to enrich himself and his family, whether he used his influence to pressure the Department of Justice to help his son avoid criminal charges, and how involved he was in his family’s foreign business dealings.

Up until this point, the Oversight and Judiciary committees have failed to uncover definitive evidence tying President Biden to criminal activity or any misconduct that constitutes a high crime or misdemeanor. Instead, Democrats and their staffers have accused Republicans of wasting money and resources on an investigation they say is politically motivated.

The Washington Examiner contacted a representative for Bobulinski’s lawyer but did not receive a response.
